A quiet early morning in St. Petersburg turned tragic on August 8 when a pedestrian lost her life while crossing a busy roadway, leaving a community grieving and investigators searching for answers.
According to St. Petersburg police, 47-year-old Kendra Dillard was walking west through a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street South and 15th Avenue South at about 2 a.m. when she was struck by a dark-colored sedan traveling south.
Dillard was taken to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital after the collision, where she later died from her injuries. Police said the driver did not stop after striking her and fled the scene, turning the incident into a fatal hit-and-run investigation.
Authorities have not publicly identified the driver, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle or driver to contact the St. Petersburg Police Department.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about pedestrian safety along MLK Street South. Community members have called for improvements, pointing to concerns about vehicle speeds, crosswalks and other safety conditions along the corridor.
For Dillard’s loved ones, the loss represents far more than another traffic statistic. She was a 47-year-old woman whose life ended suddenly while simply making her way across the street.
Her death has left family, friends and community members mourning, while the search continues for the driver responsible. As investigators work to establish what happened, the memory of Kendra Dillard remains at the center of a tragedy that has brought renewed attention to pedestrian safety in St. Petersburg.
