Dr Viljoen died on Friday, August 14, 2026, in a fatal head-on collision on the N2 near White Bridge, Knysna, according to local reporting and police information. He was travelling in a Ford Everest when it collided with a Bitou Municipality Waste Management truck. Viljoen and his passenger, practice manager Charl Steenekamp, were declared dead at the scene. The truck driver was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
Viljoen had built a long career in medicine. His professional biography states that he qualified as a physician in 1986, completed his internship at Addington Hospital and later earned a master’s degree in Internal Medicine in 1993.
