Authorities identified Fercovic-Ortegel on August 14, 2026, after he died in an off-duty drowning incident at Lake Anna in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.
According to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management, emergency officials received a report at approximately 7:40 p.m. Thursday, August 13, that a 24-year-old man who had been boating with another person was missing after entering the lake near Seay Point Road.
First responders were dispatched at 7:43 p.m. and arrived approximately nine minutes later. Units from the sheriff’s office, Louisa County and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources joined the search.
After an extensive operation, divers recovered Fercovic-Ortegel’s body at approximately 11:58 p.m.
Fercovic-Ortegel was employed as a firefighter with the county’s Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management. He was off duty when the drowning occurred.
