Thomas E. “Tom” Mooney Jr. leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his accomplishments, but by the countless people he helped, encouraged and welcomed into his life. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, coach and friend, Tom passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
For more than 54 years, Tom shared his life with his beloved wife, Valerie Mooney of Johnston. He was a proud father to Sherri Mooney and Tommy Mooney and a loving grandfather to Gia, Chloe, Valen and Charliese. He also leaves his brother John, sister-in-law Sandra, nieces, nephews and many others who considered him family.
Tom served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War with the 25th Infantry’s Wolfhounds Tunnel Rats. He received two Purple Heart medals and remained connected to fellow veterans through VFW Post 2396 and the DAV.
His commitment to others continued through community service. Tom volunteered with Special Olympics athletes and coached and sponsored numerous youth and adult sports teams. A passionate slow-pitch softball player, he competed in three World Championships and more than 10 National Championships before being inducted into the Slow Pitch Hall of Fame.
Tom also enjoyed golf and treasured his years at Indian Lake, where he found happiness fishing, boating and kayaking with family and friends. In recent years, he and Valerie enjoyed living in Naples.
His sudden passing leaves an enormous absence, but his kindness, generosity and devotion to others will endure through the people whose lives he touched.
Funeral services will be held August 20, with burial and military honors at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
