A devastating series of shootings in northern Michigan has left six people dead, including suspected gunman Chad Hickman, while another person remains critically injured, according to Michigan State Police.

Authorities were called at about 11:40 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2026, to a residence on South LaChance Road in Lake Township, Missaukee County, following a report of a shooting. Troopers found three people dead and another person critically injured. The surviving victim was taken to a hospital.

Police identified 39-year-old Chad Hickman as the suspect and said he fled before troopers arrived, triggering a large search involving emergency response, aviation and canine units. Investigators subsequently discovered another deceased person at a separate residence.

Hickman’s vehicle was later located near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township. Investigators found Hickman and another person deceased in the wooded area.

The identities of the other victims had not been released as authorities worked to notify their families. Police have also not established a confirmed motive or publicly explained the circumstances leading to the shootings.

Michigan State Police described the situation as heartbreaking and asked residents to avoid the three active crime scenes while investigators process evidence.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to reconstruct what happened and provide answers to the affected community.
