A devastating shooting in northern Michigan has left six people dead, including the suspected gunman, while another person remains critically injured, authorities said Friday.
Michigan State Police responded at about 11:40 a.m. August 14, 2026, to a home on South LaChance Road in Lake Township, Missaukee County, after receiving a report of a person being shot. Troopers found three people dead and another critically injured. The survivor was taken to a hospital.
During a large-scale search, investigators discovered another deceased person at a separate home. Police later located the suspect’s vehicle near a wooded area close to Whitlock Lake, where they found 39-year-old Chad Hickman and another person dead.
Authorities said Hickman had fled the initial scene before police arrived, prompting a search involving Michigan State Police emergency teams, aviation and canine units. Police subsequently confirmed that he was dead.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released while authorities work to notify their families. Police have also not publicly established how each person died or disclosed a motive for the violence.
Investigators are processing multiple crime scenes and have asked residents to avoid the affected areas while the investigation continues.
