A major wildfire in Las Peñas de Riglos, Huesca, Spain, remains active Saturday, August 15, 2026, after rapidly expanding across the mountainous area and forcing more than 1,000 people from their homes.
The fire, which began Monday, has now affected more than 15,000 hectares, according to the latest reports. Authorities have worked to prevent the flames from reaching populated areas and the historic monasteries of San Juan de la Peña.
At least 18 localities and a campsite have been evacuated, with approximately 1,021 people displaced. Firefighters and emergency personnel remain deployed across multiple fronts as crews attempt to contain the blaze and protect communities.
The firefighting operation involves more than 600 personnel and roughly 30 to 35 aircraft, alongside ground crews, helicopters, specialized equipment and support from the Military Emergency Unit.
Authorities have also detained a 28-year-old man in connection with the fire. He has been sent to provisional prison without bail as a suspected perpetrator; the allegation remains subject to the judicial process.
Weather conditions have offered some hope, with lower temperatures and nearby rainfall potentially helping firefighters. However, the wildfire remains active and dangerous.
