I-5 Accident Today: Major Crashes Reported on Northbound Interstate 5

A fatal crash on Interstate 80 near Sutherland, Nebraska, has left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The collision happened at approximately 5:20 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2026, near mile marker 159. Investigators said a Nissan Frontier pickup was parked on the shoulder of eastbound I-80 when it was struck by an eastbound semi-truck that crossed onto the shoulder.

Three people were inside the pickup. All were transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte, where an adult female passenger was pronounced dead. A juvenile passenger was flown to Omaha for additional treatment of serious injuries, while the pickup’s driver was treated and released. Following the crash, Nebraska State Patrol arrested the semi-truck driver. Investigators are conducting a full crash reconstruction and a commercial-vehicle post-crash investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

A separate I-80 crash later resulted in a Nebraska State Patrol cruiser being struck while officers were managing traffic from the earlier collision. The trooper suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital.

The fatal collision remains under investigation as authorities work to establish exactly what led to the crash.

Motorists travelling through the Sutherland area should continue to exercise caution and follow directions from emergency and transportation officials.
